This piece began with a full Admiralty chart of the Cornish coast, from Land’s End to Falmouth. I wanted to explore what lies beneath the surface of a place we think we know so well. I hand-inked shipwrecks and a great sea creature inspired by local folklore the kind of monsters sailors once whispered about in stormy waters.
Then I layered resin over the map to create the sense of depth in the ocean, as if the tides are still moving across the paper. For me, it’s a way of blending history, myth, and the unknown the real shipwrecks we can trace, and the imagined ones we fear. This is part of my new series exploring the stories hidden beneath our coastline.
Resin, collage and ink on board.
