Contours of Rebellion is an original mixed-media artwork inspired by the fierce independence and spectacle of the Lewes Bonfire celebrations. A hand-drawn procession moves across a map of Sussex, bringing together figures, flames and the defiant local motto, “We Wunt Be Druv”—“we will not be driven.”

Having previously lived in Lewes, I drew upon my memories of the town’s extraordinary atmosphere, where remembrance, political satire and centuries-old tradition fill the streets. The contours of the map become part of the procession, suggesting that rebellion and independence are embedded within both the landscape and the identity of its people.

Combining cartography, detailed ink drawing and layers of resin, the artwork explores the marks that history, ritual and personal memory leave upon a place. It forms part of my ongoing Myths & Tides series, in which maps become stages for stories of folklore, history and belonging.
