Safe Harbour - Framed

This piece explores the changing identity of Newhaven Harbour through a layering of past and present.

The line drawing is based on a historic photograph of the London & Paris Hotel and the working docks that once formed the centre of Newhaven's maritime life. For generations, the harbour served as a point of departure and arrival, connecting communities across the Channel and beyond.

Beneath this historic scene, layers of resin represent the water that has shaped the town's identity. Suspended within the resin is a gathering of miniature boats, representing the hundreds of vessels that now enter and shelter within the harbour and marina. Their collective form suggests movement and navigation, echoing the continual flow of traffic that has defined Newhaven for centuries.

While the industries, vessels and buildings of the harbour have changed, its purpose remains remarkably constant. Newhaven continues to be a place of arrival, departure and return.

Safe Harbour reflects on this continuity, exploring the relationship between history, movement and place through the shared language of the sea.
